{"id":11417,"date":"2022-12-06T15:45:22","date_gmt":"2022-12-06T20:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/?p=11417"},"modified":"2023-04-05T14:16:58","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T18:16:58","slug":"allen-11-saves-flight-passenger-with-cpr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/2022\/12\/06\/allen-11-saves-flight-passenger-with-cpr\/","title":{"rendered":"Allen \u201911 saves flight passenger with CPR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dr. Justin Allen \u201911, and his wife, Duke Heart CVSSU team member&nbsp;Kaitlyn, are credited for saving a passenger\u2019s life by performing CPR on a recent flight to North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/12\/Allen-duo-performs-CPR-mid-flight-427x500-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"214\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/12\/Allen-duo-performs-CPR-mid-flight-427x500-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11418\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Justin and Kaitlyn Allen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Justin, a Duke hospitalist, and Kaitlyn were in Utah so that Justin could compete in the 2022 Half Ironman World Championship race held Oct. 29 in St. George, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.duke.edu\/thepulse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report published on duke.edu.<\/a> On Nov. 1 while flying home, a medical emergency was declared approximately 40 minutes into their three-hour flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Allens were nearby when a flight attendant yelled for an AED. They immediately ran to the passenger\u2019s aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they arrived, another passenger \u2013 a pediatric physician assistant \u2013 was maintaining the passenger\u2019s airway, but neither Kaitlyn nor the PA could feel a pulse. Kaitlyn immediately started chest compressions while Justin took over the airway and prepared the AED.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the second round of compressions, the patient began moving her arms and became responsive.&nbsp;With the passenger\u2019s vitals stable, Justin cleared the patient\u2019s cervical spine and she was able to sit upright, and eventually get back into a seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately the passenger arrived in stable condition and upon landing was handed off to paramedics for further evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Duke\u2019s report, this is not the first time the Allen\u2019s have been in an emergency situation together. The two worked together at Lakeland Health in St. Joseph, Michigan during Justin\u2019s internal medicine residency. There, they worked together during rapid responses and code blues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While at Wabash, Justin majored in biology and minored in chemistry.
