{"id":10810,"date":"2021-02-01T09:55:45","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T14:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/?p=10810"},"modified":"2022-07-25T15:21:18","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T19:21:18","slug":"jacob-burnett-15-selected-as-an-executive-editor-for-university-of-pennsylvania-law-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/2021\/02\/01\/jacob-burnett-15-selected-as-an-executive-editor-for-university-of-pennsylvania-law-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacob Burnett &#8217;15 selected as an Executive Editor for University of Pennsylvania Law Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/1601514129014.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/1601514129014.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10811\" width=\"241\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/1601514129014.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/1601514129014-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/1601514129014-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/1601514129014-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Jacob Burnett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Jacob Burnett &#8217;15, a Wabash Rhodes Scholar and political science major, has been selected to serve as an Executive Editor for Volume 170 of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review \u2013 the oldest and one of the most cited law journals in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I had to capture what it is like to work with The University of Pennsylvania Law Review in one word, it would be: exciting,\u201d Burnett said. \u201cThe Journal publishes some of the most groundbreaking legal scholarship that scholars, practitioners, and students are producing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burnett, who is currently attending the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and works as a research and teaching assistant, previously served as an Associate Editor for The Journal and was selected to serve in the new role after submitting a written application to the outgoing board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI applied for the position specifically because&nbsp;I enjoy working directly on Law Review pieces, and as an Executive Editor, I believed I would thrive when working directly with authors and incoming Associate Editors,\u201d he said. \u201cThe substantive scholarship is fundamental to the success of the Journal, and I hope to play a key role in ensuring that the Law Review publishes well-edited, thoughtful, and excellent pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burnett, a native of Mishawaka, Indiana, was active at Wabash College through Moot Court, Student Senate, The Bachelor, Wabash College Democrats and Pre-Law Society, among other activities and organizations. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Psi Chi and Lambda Pi Eta honor societies.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/main_jacob-hugs-mills.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/main_jacob-hugs-mills.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10812\" width=\"303\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/main_jacob-hugs-mills.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/02\/main_jacob-hugs-mills-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Jacob Burnett gets a congratulatory hug from Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater Jessie Mills during a reception in 2014 to celebrate Burnett being named a Rhodes Scholar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Burnett was one of 32&nbsp;students in the nation to be named a Rhodes Scholar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He graduated from the University of Oxford with a master\u2019s degree in global governance and diplomacy and criminology and criminal justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGrowing up in poverty and watching my mom do God&#8217;s work to lead my family through class oppression has always inspired me to work hard and keep moving forward,\u201d Burnett said. \u201cMy journey is one that could not have happened without her, who I look to for strength and tenacity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alumnus said he\u2019s thankful for the Wabash professors he had who were integral to his success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, Professor Scott Himsel&nbsp;and Dr. Robert Horton wrote me letters of recommendation for my law school application process,\u201d Burnett said. \u201cThey have always been great mentors to&nbsp;me and have guided me along my&nbsp;journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout Wabash, I don&#8217;t know if I would be where I am today!
