Bigfoot…Yarns…Strings…Flying Turtles…and Other Scientific “Stuff”…

Adam Bowen

Our Media Center Superstar, Adam Bowen, has just finished his magic with the 2012 version of the Big Bash Scarlet Yarns. Adam thinks it’s the best one yet…I have absolutely no reason on earth to disagree.

Adam’s good…real good…

In a strange but all so Wabash way, Adam’s work intersected with that of Ian Grant ’13.  Ian has been doing some research and he because intrigued by a story told by Don Kerner ’62 in June at the Big Bash.  Don was related a time when…well…click here for Ian’s story.

While we often think we’re telling “Yarns” to remind us of the Good Old Days…these yarns can also fuel the creative minds…

If You Designed a Liberal Arts IT Firm…

Greg Huebner H'77

That’s Greg Huebner H’77…now retired art professor/legend at Wabash.  His studio?  Well, it’s located at Apparatus, an IT firm in Indianapolis.  The CEO of Apparatus is Wabash Trustee Kelly Pfledderer ’96.

Now it’s starting to make sense?

Greg is the Artist in residence at Apparatus – he shares his artistic talents with the IT firm’s team.  The idea was formed when Kelly and Greg…  For more on the story, click here.

Montana Timmons ’13 in the sports news

Montana Timmons '13

I opened up the Lafayette Journal-Courier Sports page – the only part of the paper I read – please don’t tell anyone!  I instantly recognized current Wabash rising senior Montana Timmons.

Montana is doing a different kind of internship this summer…I am pretty sure he’s enjoying his opportunity as much as any other student at Wabash.

Synopsis – You Saw It First Right Here!

Justin, Joseph, and Charlie

Remember these names – Justin Taylor ’15, Joseph Jackson ’14, and Charlie Kolisek ’15.

Back in February, Justin attended an Entrepreneurial Summit here at Wabash.  Two days later, their idea – Synopsis – was born.  Synopsis is a social media network that could well revolutionize the college admissions process.  Not just Wabash…but every college and university.

Three Wabash guys with an idea that could change the world of college admissions.  Pretty cool!

To find out more about this exciting effort and how you could help, email Justin at:

Another Wabash Road Trip 2012

Frank Ruvoli ’13 and Rudy Altergott ’13 are not the only Roa d Trippers this summer.

Greg Birk ’77 and Coach Rob Johnson H’77 made their way to the Olympic trials recently.  Greg took a little longer route – visiting with several Wabash alumni along the way.

Greg Birk '77 and Stephen Pavy '81

Greg stopped at the Joseph Phelps Winery in Napa Valley to catch up with Stephen Pavy ’81.  Stephen is the Director of Hospitality and Wine Education at the Winery.  Greg and Stephen are class agents for their classes and worked together in the Admissions office at Wabash.

Coach Rob Johnson H'77, Adam White '98, Matt Fleshman '98, and Greg Birk '77

At the Olympic Trials in Oregon, Coach Johnson and Greg caught up with former Wabash runners Adam White and Matt Fleshman.

Greg and his family continued the trip with their yearly stop in Colorado…

Still 630 – Indomitable Spirits

David Weglarz '03

David Weglarz ’03 is “going for it”.  He and his wife are opening Still 630 in St. Louis.  David described it as a micro distillery.

It was one of those “we’re young…it’s our dream…we need to do this” moves…the perfect Wabash story.  Along with all those other young and not-so-young Wabash entrepreneurs…David fits right it.

I got excited just talking to him about it.  You can check out Still 630 on their web site.

Road Trip Starts Today!

You Have To Have "The Shirt"

The Grunge is back from vacation a little early and headed off in a few hours to St. Louis for the start of the 2012 Road Trip with Rudy and Frank.

Yesterday it was a bazillion degrees in St. Louis, new record.  Hopefully, it’s about 72 today! (No way!)

Lots of stops on the 2012 version – hope to see you at one or more.

Wabash Men in Service

David Hensel, Wabash 1979; Hamilton Hensel, Wabash 2016; Kurt Miller, Wabash 2016; and Philip Coons, Wabash 1967

This is a guest post from my friend, Phil Coons ’67.

“We were Breathitt County, Kentucky on our Appalachian Service Project last week. We were part of a North United Methodist Church contingent from Indianapolis. I dragged four Wabash hats and my reunion shirt from 5 years ago all the way to Jackson, KY for this picture. The towel you may recognize from this year’s reunion. Hamilton and Kurt will be entering the Wabash freshman class this fall. GO WABASH! BEAT DEPAUW!

Amen, Phil, Amen!

GaBunge Has Been Spotted!

The Grunge morphed into GaBunge on June 27th.  By the time you read this we will have toured Chicago and be relaxing at Mackinaw Island.  Most of the Clan along.  Spoilage, I am sure, already in progress.

When I come back, I hope to be a better Grunge poster.  The 9 faithful readers hung in there…but I know days went by without any sign of life from me.  I plan to fix that…

Meanwhile…

What’s the ice cream flavor of the morning?

Work out?  Who works out?

Geez, must have washed these shorts in hot water…

There’s no such thing as a bad picture of your kids or grandkids…

I can get ready for the Grand Canyon next week!

The Bricks of Center Hall

Center Hall

I have no idea how many bricks there are in the iconic structure of our Center Hall.  By themselves, each brick is just that – a brick.  Put together they have become a timeless memory for all who stroll by or take a walk up those creaky steps…just to hear them utter their timeless sound.

Take a brick or even a couple of bricks away.  You still had Center Hall.  Maybe not as attractive.  Maybe not as strong…but it is still there.  However, as you remove more and more bricks, the entire Hall is compromised…from every vantage point.  Sure the bricks don’t change when they are added together or taken away…the soul of Center Hall is the one that changes.

So it is with your annual support of Wabash.  You don’t need to be the one who gives a wall…a pallet of bricks…or even a couple of dozen.  No, you just need to make sure your gift is there.  In your checkbook, that $25 or $50 or $100 is exactly that – no more and no less.  Added together?  That’s when the magic of a stronger Wabash comes into play.

Are you in?  If the answer is “not yet”, please make a gift before June 30, 2012.  Your annual gift builds a stronger Wabash each and every year.  Here’s the link to on-line giving: https://www.wabash.edu/alumni/egift

If you are in, great.  The Grunge thanks you…Wabash thanks you.  Now, pick up the phone and call one pledge brother/teammate/fellow independent man.  Get him in.  His brick is important as well.

Wabash will be stronger…and you can smile that “this Good Place” keeps getting better and better…
