The Hobbit

I have been reading The Hobbit since I bought it last Sunday. If you have seen any of The Lord of The Rings movies, the books are a hundred times better. J.R.R. Tolkien grabs your imagination and takes you along for Bilbo Baggins’ adventure. I don’t think I have been as part of a book as I have with this one. It is very well written and though lenghty, you will forgive yourself because you will not be able to put it down. Go read it, you will not regret it.

Get a Job, Stay in contact, And Make Some Cash

Not sure how your parents deal with spending money or cash while you are in high school, but like it changed for me it might for you as well. (By the way, go listen to some Ray Charles, Lonely Avenue is a great pick.) In high school, since I was living at home, I wouldn’t say I was spoiled but I could just ask if I wanted something and I’d get it, not expensive stuff. Video games inlcuding my PS3 and my iPad I bought with internship money, yeah I know wish I hadn’t.

Now that I am in college, there is no “Can we go to Chili’s?” Well, there is but you are gonna have to pay. No longer are your parents there to pick up the tab so it is most likely that you won’t be going out as much or at all. If you want to go out at least once or twice a month with your buddies while in school, the time to start saving up is now and start looking for cheap deals for food. For example, if you like wings don’t go to Buffalo Wild Wings go to Applebee’s after 10 any day of the week for half price appetizers (Click it come on, look at the menu). For less than 10 bucks with a drink too and in my opinion they are better than Buffalo Wild Wings.

Even McDonalds will start running your bank account dry going at least every friday like my buddies and I do. All I am saying is manage your money and make sure you have a job for when you are on break and at home. Believe me you are gooing to want to have extra cash in your pocket. When you are not on break it is important that you stay in contact with your supervisor or with whom ever you are working with. 200 bucks or 60 bucks will take you a long way with buying your self some food. Though I have been home for about 2 weeks now and already have a job with my brother at his Ford Diesel shop I still haven’t gone so make sure you go to work as well.

Most importantly, try to save as much money as you can when wanting to buy junk you don’t need like a video game or unnecessary luxuries. You are going to be or are a college student and still have the rest of your life to throw money away.

Thanks for reading yall.

Yesterday was Christmas last year too

Yes, I am still alive. I think what I had planned out to be a nap from writing after finals turned an elongated hibernation.

Well, I am home now and winter break is here at the best possible time. As much as I love the cold weather back at C-ville, I think Houston’s relative warmer weather can’t be hated. My parents will never understand me when I say “I don’t need a jacket, it’s hot outside.”

Though yesterday was Christmas the day the family gets together is on Christmas Eve, better known as Noche Buena by my Mexican parents. I spent it with my parents, brothers and their wives, and my newborn neice who is now a month old.

Opening gifts was freakin awesome. My oldest brother is a private Ford Diesel Mechanic and we all pitched in to get my dad a F-250. Well, being a college student I am going to work for him over the next three weeks to pay off my part. We handed my dad the gift bag and the keys were inside. His first response was “Oh, I needed new keys.” Then when we told him to go outside, he could not believe it. He was stoked because he has always wanted one. All the excitment took me back to a year ago when I was still in high school.

A year ago I had just received my acceptance letters from Wabash, St.Thomas here in Houston and Berklee College of Music in Boston. That is after I took out my denial letters and schools I really did not want to go to. Denial letters were probably the best thing that I got at the time, (not as great as my Wabash acceptance lettter though). For me, the more options I have it becomes overhwelming. It would still be 4 more months until I had to make the biggest and greatest decision of my life yet, but it was nice that my options were those I liked. This time last year when family was over from all over, they were all asking me the same thing “Where are you going for school?” I would reply with, “Not sure yet, but these are my options” and I’d tell them what I knew about each school and the great alumni they had all produced.

At the time, I saw my life going in three different directions and what I imagined life at Wabash is not how it is at all. It is a million times better. It is definitely hard, but football or any sport would not be fun or interesting if it looked or was easy. Thats why Wabash Always Fights, because nothing is easy and we can work hard through it. WAF WAF WAF

Thanks for reading, and in the spirit of Ron Burgundy “Stay Classy.”

Dead Week?

Well besides my three papers, a class presentation, piano jury, and Glee Club performance this week is dead.  If you didn’t catch it, there was a whole lot of sarcasm in there.
I suppose I have very little to moan and groan about since the first day of class I received a syllabus that listed out all of my assignments. But still, as a student we will always have something to be upset about.
“I don’t want to go to class.” Why “It’s Monday.” Or it’s Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday or Friday. They are all fair game.
Nevertheless, I am feeling bled out and done. But as bad as I want to be done, I am not done yet. I am still pushing myself through this week to finish this semester strongly and proudly. I have been giving myself some time for leisure and I think that it might be more than ok especially on such a week as dead week. Glee Club Winter concert is today and it could not have come on a better week or day. Getting up there and performing hymns for the Wabash and Crawfordsville community feels great. I have to go get all dressed up and showered for this now.

Back to Wabash!

Well I flew back yesterday, wrote a blog at Andrew’s house lastnight, posted it and now its gone??? That has never happened before, but oh well. I’ll try to remember what I wrote about.

Back in the Great state of Indiana!

Had a great break that I had no idea I even needed. Thanksgiving with the family was freakin awesome. We had three diferent turkeys: Roasted Turkey, Baked Turkey, my brothers Cajun style fried Turkey and they were all really good. If I had not gained “Freshman 15” I have now.

It was great seeing my parents, brothers, newborn niece, and spending time with them. I even got to see a couple friends from high school and middle school. One thing I noticed was that they were not looking forwad to going back to school. I could and still don’t understand this. I didnt want to insult them by asking, “Well why are you going to a school you don’t enjoy?” I was very much looking to get back to Wabash and finishing this semester strong. Nothing takes the place of family, especially not school, but there is much more to Wabash than meets the eye. I have not made a lot of big decissions in life, but I know this isn’t and will not be one I will ever regret.
