Lt. Mark Ostapowicz ’92, of the Grand Rapids, MI police department, recently was an instructor for a civilian training class for the Grand Rapids Police Department Citizen Police Academy. Coordinator of the Academy is just one of Mark’s areas of responsibility within the GRPD.
After Wabash, Mark graduated from the Grand Valley State University Police Academy and was hired by the Grand Rapids Police Department in 1992. He is Night Watch Commander, in charge of all patrol operations during the night shift, and Commander of the Crisis Negotiation Unit (commonly known as the Hostage Negotiation Unit).
Mark has held many different positions within the department, including patrol officer, narcotics/vice officer, SWAT team, sergeant in the Training Unit, Patrol Sergeant, and he was assigned as the Detective Unit Lieutenant in charge of investigations. Mark is also a certified instructor in several Use of Force disciplines; which he teaches within the Grand Rapids Police Department and at Grand Valley State University.
