Dr. R. Thomas Schmidt ’78 is a surgical breast oncologist in Indianapolis and founder of the Breast Care Center of Indiana PC.  Dr. Schmidt is the author of an article, Advances in Breast Cancer, part of Cancer Care 2013, a healthcare supplement to the Indianapolis Business Journal last week.

Dr. Schmidt was Indiana’s first surgical breast oncologist and has been the medical director of St. Vincent Hospital’s breast program since 2003.  Last fall he was an event chairperson for the St. Vincent Foundation Key to the Cure fundraising gala to benefit programs and services at St. Vincent Cancer Care.

“Dr. Schmidt received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1982 from Indiana University and completed his post-graduate internship and surgical training at the University of Louisville affiliated hospitals. During this time, Dr. Schmidt developed a strong interest in the treatment of breast disease. Due to his desire for more extensive training, he completed a surgical breast oncology fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center, and became the first surgical breast oncologist in Indiana. He is board certified through the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Schmidt has been named Top Breast Surgeon by Indianapolis Monthly several years in a row.”
